Takayuki Sakiyama

11 September - 3 October 2026

Pierre Marie Giraud is pleased to announce a new exhibition by Takayuki Sakiyama, opening on September 10 and continuing through October 3.

Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1958, Sakiyama studied ceramics in the Crafts Department of Osaka University of Arts, graduating in 1981. In 1987, he established his own Hidaka-gama kiln. His studio, located on the shores of the Izu Peninsula, overlooks the sea, a constant source of inspiration that the artist translates into sculptural vessels seemingly shaped by the elemental forces of wind, water, and sand.

Sakiyama forms his clay into fluid, curvaceous shapes, carving their surfaces with a fine plissé. Over the years, he has developed and refined a distinctive vocabulary: sculptural vessels in which interior and exterior flow seamlessly into one another, their surfaces covered in a uniquely textured sand glaze. The sense of movement embedded in these works reflects the artist’s fascination with tides and waves, as well as the natural curves and undulations of the sea. Seemingly shaped by the relentless encounter of wind and sand, his vessels evoke both the destructive force of a storm and the quiet contemplation of a Japanese raked garden.

For his third exhibition at the gallery since 2015, Sakiyama will present a new group of sand-glazed ceramics in his distinctive palette of beige and understated, delicate tones. Their subtle surfaces recall the shifting texture of the shore, washed clean by the azure waters of the Pacific.
