The Stories Between Lines
Pierre Marie Giraud is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by Jane Yang-D’Haene — for the first time at the gallery — on view from Thursday 5 February to Saturday 28 February. Bringing together a focused selection of recent works, the exhibition offers a close view of Yang-D’Haene’s ongoing exploration of perception, time, gesture, and light.
Born in South Korea, Yang-D’Haene lives and works in New York. Her background in architecture and design informs a practice shaped by proportion, rhythm, and a considered sense of space. Each work is developed with precision and attention, while the making remains open, responsive, and hands-on.
Working in ceramics, Yang-D’Haene produces vessels as unique works. Simple forms serve as a starting point, before the surface is patiently shaped, refined, and reworked. Glazes, washes, and texture generate nuanced effects, from tones settling into relief to the interplay of matte and light-catching passages.
A recurring reference is the Korean dal hang-ari, or moon jar, valued for its generous volume and slight, natural variations. Yang-D’Haene draws on this balance between archetype and irregularity, allowing classical forms to guide her while introducing a contemporary sensibility. Gentle relief, soft transitions, and measured gestures activate the vessel in space, so the work remains both grounded and expansive.
Across her series, the vessel functions as both object and image. It is a volume that gathers light and a surface that invites attention. As the viewer moves around the works, the contours seem to shift with each change in viewpoint, appearing at times brighter, deeper, or softer. From a distance, the forms appear calm and self-contained.
We invite you to join us for the opening on Thursday 5 February, from 5 to 8 PM.
