Pierre Marie Giraud is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of works by Japanese ceramicist Kazunori Hamana, on view at the gallery from Thursday, May 22nd to Saturday, June 21st, 2025.
Hamana creates sculptural vessels that blend traditional Japanese ceramics with a personal and intuitive approach to form. Born in Osaka in 1969, he is a self-taught artist who turned to ceramics in his early forties. He uses Japan’s ancient coil-building technique to hand-build each piece, drawing inspiration from tsubo, traditional clay jars.
Living in a coastal area of Chiba Prefecture, Hamana balances his time between farming, fishing, and working in his studio by the sea. His slow-paced life shapes his art. Each piece is made with clay from Shiga and fired in a kiln housed in a restored Edo-period building. After firing, the works are left outside to weather naturally—exposed to sea winds, rain, and sunlight.
Hamana’s work has been shown internationally, including at the Yokohama Museum of Art and Towada Art Center. His quiet, thoughtful pieces speak through form, texture, and stillness.
