Bijoy Jain

Indian, born in 1965 in Mumbai

Bijoy Jain (born in Mumbai in 1965) is an Indian architect, designer, and founder of Studio Mumbai, the interdisciplinary practice he established in 1995 after studying architecture at Washington University in St. Louis and working in Los Angeles and London. His work is known for bringing together architects, engineers, artisans, master builders, and technicians in a collaborative process that treats making, time, and material experimentation as central to design.

Jain’s practice moves between architecture, furniture, and sculptural objects, and is deeply rooted in the relationship between human life and the natural world. Across his projects, he pays close attention to the elemental presence of water, air, earth, and light, creating works that feel both timeless and intensely tactile. Whether designing buildings or smaller pieces such as benches, screens, and daybeds, Jain approaches each object as a study in space, craft, and everyday ritual.

Internationally, Bijoy Jain is recognized for a body of work that crosses the boundaries of art, architecture, and material practice. Through Studio Mumbai, he has helped shape a distinct contemporary language that is at once local and universal, grounded in Indian craft traditions yet open to new ways of inhabiting space.
