Yo Akiyama

22 April - 15 May 2021

Pierre Marie Giraud is pleased to present Akiyama Yo's third exhibition at the gallery in Brussels. Akiyama is undoubtly one of the great ceramic artists of our day. Forever inquisitive, he explores and experiments, refines, revisits and re-invents. The intimate size of his new series allows him to combine the whole gamut of his techniques like surface fissuring, fracturing, wheel-throwing, smoothing and rust patination to finally produce sculptural compositions that are quietly inviting of contemplation.

Akiyama Yo was born in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan in 1953. He won the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Japan Ceramic Society in 2016. His works are in many important collections and museums over the world, including 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Japan; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA; Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston, USA; Victoria & Albert Museum, London, UK.
